During the second week of our expedition south with Oceanwide Expeditions, a mysterious note appeared at the bottom of the day’s itinerary:
“Dinner served at 19:00. Surprise Location (weather dependant).”
We dutifully went about our normal business, but on the return from our afternoon excursion, tables could be seen on the helipad. At 18:55 the announcement came over the tannoy loud and clear: we were to all meet on the helipad for an Antarctic BBQ!

Everyone wrapped up warm and queued for the incredible food: chicken, ribs, sausages, steaks, corn on the cob, jacket potatoes and garlic bread galore. Not to mention the pièce de résistance: glühwein (mulled wine) on tap! A worldly mix of 80s and 90s pop music pumped through the speakers as people enjoyed the party atmosphere, whilst all around us lay a spectacular backdrop of towering snow-covered mountains and floating icebergs.

It wasn’t long before a penguin-inspired conga line started and a corner of the helipad was claimed for an impromptu dance floor. All in all, the entire event lasted about an hour and a half. After that, the tables were cleared away, some people drifted off to bed, others to the bar – and Antarctica returned to serene normality. But for that 90 minutes, we were privileged to be a part of the southernmost BBQ in the world!
